To mark United Nations Day this year, we at SSM Barcelona created a tradition of our own: Diversity and Inclusion Day. October 25 was a day to celebrate the cultures, flavors, and stories that make up our vibrant community. Our students, faculty, and staff came together for a potluck feast, each bringing a dish from their home country—a true celebration of global cuisine and unity.
As everyone arrived, the table transformed into a colorful tapestry of flavors: Jollof rice and spicy chicken from Nigeria, Lumpia from the Philippines, creamy Tiramisu and hearty Lasagna from Italy, Georgia’s Khinkali dumplings, Egyptian Falafel, buttery French Croissants, and so much more. It was a feast for the senses, with the aromas, colors, and textures reflecting the diversity of our SSM family.
Each participant took a moment to introduce their dish, sharing stories, family traditions, and little-known facts about their countries. There were laughs, gasps, and many “oohs” and “aahs” as we learned about each dish’s cultural significance and the personal memories attached to them.
Finally, with anticipation at its peak, we all dug into this beautiful spread. Every bite was a journey to another part of the world. As we tasted each dish, we deepened our understanding and appreciation of each other’s cultures. Full of laughter, great food, and warm stories, we left the gathering with our tummies sated and hearts filled with gratitude for our diverse community.
We’re already looking forward to the next Diversity and Inclusion Day—a tradition that will continue to bring us closer, one dish at a time.
