They said it couldn’t be done, so we did it. Last week, from March 18-20, SSM Barcelona hosted the first-ever International Conference on Advanced Research on the Humanities and Social Sciences at the Talent Garden Campus of SSM Barcelona, welcoming SSM doctoral students who came to present their dissertation papers. This year’s event witnessed diverse participants, primarily from SSM’s partner in India, Jaro Education, alongside our own Sandra Sergio Sotto, the In-Residence Director of SSM Madrid.
Distinct panelists, including Dr. Elizabeth Soliday-Naui, Academic Dean of SSM Barcelona; Dr. Vasileos Margaritis, Head of SSM Research Center; Dr. Izadora Skraçic; and Dr. Karen Barranon, guided the proceedings. Their expertise lent invaluable insights as they engaged with topics ranging from exploratory studies on digital tools managing Type 2 Diabetes to the fascinating realm of VTOL Air Taxis.
Following the morning presentations, an intensive consultative session ensued, offering candidates personalized mentorship from the expert panelists to refine and elevate their dissertations. Participants lauded the program for fostering clarity, enabling recalibration, and inspiring redirection in their research endeavors. One attendee highlighted how exposure to diverse presentations enriched their understanding, providing insights into potential questions and alternative problem-solving approaches.
Moreover, observing seasoned presenters offered invaluable lessons on effective presentation strategies for those embarking on their research journey. Beyond the academic sphere, participants relished opportunities to network and explore the cultural riches of Barcelona. From marveling at the architectural splendor of the Sagrada Familia to strolls along Bogatell beach and immersive tours of the Gothic Quarter, each day concluded with enriching experiences that complemented the intellectual discourse.
Organizing an international conference of this magnitude demanded meticulous planning and coordination, yet the resounding endorsement from our doctoral candidates underscores its profound impact. Reflecting on this success, we are committed to fostering a culture of innovation and excellence, nurturing future leaders who will shape a better world. Encouraged by the positive reception, SSM remains steadfast in its mission to host more such conferences, empowering DBA students to embark on transformative research endeavors aligned with our vision of nurturing visionary leaders.
